Book Talk

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Today we went over the requirements for giving a good Book Talk.  Ask your child to show the information to you and explain what we went over today.  Students need to have chosen a book and have the scoring guide signed by a parent by September 26th.  I want a parent’s signature so that I know you’re aware of the assignment.

Classroom Expectations

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

I thought I might take the opportunity to tell you about one of my classroom rules.  By the 6th grade students know what is and what is not appropriate behavior.  Students know that when the teacher is talking they should be listening.  If a student is doing something inappropriate while I am talking, I will take whatever it is that the student is doing.  If a student is doing work for another teacher, I will take that work.  If a student is reading a book, I will take the book.  Anything that I take goes in my May box, and the item will be returned to the student in May.  I will return library books to the library instead of keeping them until May.

I will give the inappropriate items to parents if they want to come pick them up.

I will be out of the class this morning.  Willard Intermediate is involved with the Missouri Reading Intiative and I will out of the classroom several times this school year in the mornings for the sessions.  We had one meeting before school started and I must say that I am excited about what we’re going to learn this year!  This year the  MRI training focuses on reading.  This year we are all teaching reading during iTime.   Don’t those two sentences look good together?  We will be able to implement immediately everything that is presented in the MRI sessions.

The kids will be taking 2 different kinds of spelling tests today, but they’re not really tests.  I’m just using them to introduce the words that I expect the kids to spell and understand.  They are allowed to use dictionaries and parents as needed.  The tests are to be completed by the time they get to class Tuesday the 26th.  I will not collect them at all on Monday.

2008-2009 School Year

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

As I look forward to a new school year I am curious about how many students and parents will look at my blog.  If you check out this site would you let me know the next time you see me?  Or you could just e-mail me at landerso@willard.k12.mo.us, my school e-mail.

I plan to have a page for long term assignments for each subject and posts for short term assignments.  If you ever have a questions about assignments the quickest way to contact me would be by e-mail.

I am thrilled with the new class we will have called iTime.  This time is set aside daily to work on reading and reading skills needed for success both for the MAP test and life.

Be ready on Tuesday!!
